Welcome to German Language Exchange!

Val Collier:
The exchange offers an excellent opportunity to practise all language skills and, in particular, provides intense practice in speaking and listening.  In addition students have the tremendous opportunity to experience life in this unique, exciting city which has been at the forefront of political developments in Europe and is a centre of immense cultural and historical significance. On a personal level students gain a valuable insight into everyday German life by living with a family. During our stay there is a wide range of organised activities including: attendance at our partner school, the John Lennon Oberschule (Grammar School), sightseeing in Berlin and a full day excursion to Potsdam (see Photos). There is also scope for individuals to arrange their own activities at the weekend and in the evenings.

John Lennon Oberschule

Our Partner School is a mixed school for students from 12 to 19. It lies in the geographical middle of Berlin but before Reunification was in the East, not far from the Berlin Wall. Renamed  the John Lennon Oberschule after Reunification, it has built up a reputation as a school with a liberal, open minded outlook, fostering links through schools and visits with many other countries.

With a population of 3.4 million, Berlin is the largest city and capital of Germany. Divided by the Allies in 1945 and by the Berlin Wall in 1961, it witnessed in 1989 crucial events leading to German Reunification and in 1990 became the capital of a reunited Germany. Berlin is a major centre of culture, politics, media, and science in Europe, and is recognised for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and high quality of living.
